Let’s celebrate our natural size……. Say’s Medivyom’s Health Manager

5th to 14th February is Eating Disorder Awareness week and Medivyom takes yet another step towards social responsibility by spreading awareness and educating communities about the ways to prevent it.

Let us take the first step and understand what Eating disorder is according to Wikipedia “Eating disorders refer to a group of conditions characterized by abnormal eating habits that may involve either insufficient or excessive food intake to the detriment of an individual's physical and emotional healthBinge eating disorderbulimia nervosaanorexia nervosa being the most common specific forms in the United States.

It was primarily thought of affecting the women but it affects the males as well.

Some reasons which can cause such Eating disorder are:

·         Peer pressure.
·         Idealized body-types seen in the media.
·         Genetic Disorder.
·         Comorbid Disorders e.g. depression, substance abuse, obsessive compulsive disorder etc.
·         Environmental Factors e.g. child abuse, foster homes, foster care etc.
·         Social Isolation.
·         Cultural Pressure: There is a cultural emphasis on thinness and becoming the perfect figures.

Complications of such disorder:
·         Acne
·         Constipation
·         Osteoporosis
·         Diarrhea
·         Brain Atrophy
·         Edema
·         Kidney Failure etc

Treatment of such Eating Disorders are:
·         Cognitive behavioral therapy.
·         Acceptance and commitment therapy.
·         Behavioral therapy.
·         Music therapy.
·         Recreational therapy.
·         Nutritional therapy.
·         Medication
·         Self Help.
·         Psychoanalysis
·         Inpatient Care

So the next time you plan to go on a diet and look like celebrities just remember:

·         The models you see on cover pages of any magazine look good only with help. Sometimes the photographers use camera techniques to make them look that glamorous.
·         Always remember that Barbie’s and Mannequins are not real women.
·         There is a difference in the physique i.e. height and weight ratio of a model and an average being.
·         A psychological study in 1995 found that three minutes spent looking at a fashion magazine caused 70% of women to feel depressed, guilty and shameful of their bodies.

The most important fact is that stay happy ,love and respect your body.

World Cancer Day
Working Together Against Cancer
February 4th marks World Cancer Day, a day that brings awareness to the disease and Medivyom takes yet another step towards spreading awareness. The theme of this year is “Cancer Can Be Prevented Too” with the main focus to avoid the most common causes of cancer.
So let us check out some easy ways to prevent Cancer these include changes in lifestyle and one can drastically cut down the risk of many types of cancer.
·         Avoid smoking: It is the most significant cancer causing risk factor.
·         Avoid exposure to smoke: This is also called second hand smoking and is the smoke exhaled by the one who is smoking as this smoke contains carcinogens which interfere in the normal cell growth and increase the risk of cancer development?
·         Limit alcohol consumption: Excessive amounts of alcohol increase the risk of many types of cancer.
·         Exercise regularly to help prevent cancer: The American Cancer Institute has recommended exercising 30 or more minutes, at least 5 days a week for cancer prevention.
·         Limit animal fat and red meat: Studies suggest that animal fat increases the risk of cancer. A high fat diet is one of the major causes of obesity which is a risk factor of many types of cancer.
·         Eat fruits and vegetables: A diet rich in fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of developing cancer as they contain antioxidants which help in repairing damaged cells.  Fruits like blueberry and grapes have anti cancer properties.
·         Move safely in the sun: Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer and is one of the most preventable types of cancer. The first step in preventing cancer is to avoid UV exposure.  One can wear sunscreen, avoid mid day sun, wear protective clothing etc.
·         Know your family history: Knowing the family history is important to access the risk factor for certain types of cancer. Breast, colon, ovarian, is some of the types of cancers which are considered hereditary.

·         Always know what you are being exposed to in your work place: Chemicals in the workplace increases the risk of developing cancer like colon and kidney cancer. If one is exposed to fumes, dust etc you have the legal right to know what you are being exposed to. Also to ask your employer limiting the exposure.
·         Practice safe sex: Unsafe sex can result in infection of HPV virus, which is a known of cervical cancer.
·         Get screened for cancer regularly: Cancer screening tests can help prevent it. A few examples of such tests are colonoscopy, Pap smear etc.
Let us all join hands in the fight against cancer.

For a World without leprosy

29th Jan is World Leprosy Day and Medivyom takes yet another step towards social responsibility by spreading awareness.
Leprosy or Hansen's disease (HD) is a chronic disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae. That causes damage to the skin and the peripheral nervous system. The disease develops slowly (from six months to over 40 years) and results in skin lesions and deformities, most often affecting the cooler places on the body for example, eyes, nose, earlobes, hands, feet, and testicles. The skin lesions and deformities can be very disfiguring and are the reason that infected individuals were considered outcasts in many cultures.
What is the history of Leprosy?
Leprosy has tormented humans throughout recorded history. The earliest possible account of a disease that many scholars believe is leprosy appears in an Egyptian Papyrus document written around 1550 B.C. Around 600 B.C. Indian writings describe a disease that resembles leprosy. In Europe, leprosy first appeared in the records of ancient Greece after the army of Alexander the Great came back from India and then in Rome in 62 B.C. coinciding with the return of Pompeii's troops from Asia Minor. Throughout its history, leprosy has been feared and misunderstood. For a long time leprosy was thought to be a hereditary disease, a curse, or a punishment from God. For example, in Europe during the Middle Ages, leprosy sufferers had to wear special clothing, ring bells to warn others that they were close, and even walk on a particular side of the road, depending on the direction of the wind.
What are the symptoms?
·         Skin lesions that are lighter than your normal skin color.
·         Lesions have decreased sensation to touch, heat, or pain.
·         Lesions do not heal after several weeks to months.
·         Numbness or absent sensation in the hands, arms, feet, and legs.
·         Muscle weakness.
How does Leprosy Spread?
Despite first discovering Mycobacterium leprae in 1873, leprosy research scientists still do not completely understand how leprosy is spread. Most scientists believe that leprosy can be spread from person to person in infected respiratory droplets. While this may be one way in which leprosy is spread, more than 50 percent of the people who develop leprosy have no confirmed contact with an infected person.
Factors that may influence how leprosy is spread include:
·         Environmental conditions.
·         The degree of susceptibility of the person.
·         The extent of exposure.
How can leprosy be treated?
The disease can generally be cured with antibiotics. With early diagnosis and treatment, many leprosy symptoms and complications can be minimized or avoided all together. It is important to note that leprosy treatment differs depending upon the form of the disease. Treatment typically involves medicines along with supportive care.
The treatment of Leprosy is free and available at all health centers.
Let us all help provide people affected by leprosy through Medivyom’s Touching Lives a more holistic, integrated approach that encompasses healthcare, education, rehabilitation and training.
