5th to 14th February is Eating Disorder Awareness week and Medivyom takes yet another step towards social responsibility by spreading awareness and educating communities about the ways to prevent it.
Let us take the first step and understand what Eating disorder is according to Wikipedia “Eating disorders refer to a group of conditions characterized by abnormal eating habits that may involve either insufficient or excessive food intake to the detriment of an individual's physical and emotional health. Binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa being the most common specific forms in the United States.
It was primarily thought of affecting the women but it affects the males as well.
Some reasons which can cause such Eating disorder are:
· Peer pressure.
· Idealized body-types seen in the media.
· Genetic Disorder.
· Comorbid Disorders e.g. depression, substance abuse, obsessive compulsive disorder etc.
· Environmental Factors e.g. child abuse, foster homes, foster care etc.
· Social Isolation.
· Cultural Pressure: There is a cultural emphasis on thinness and becoming the perfect figures.
Complications of such disorder:
· Acne
· Constipation
· Osteoporosis
· Diarrhea
· Brain Atrophy
· Edema
· Kidney Failure etc
Treatment of such Eating Disorders are:
· Cognitive behavioral therapy.
· Acceptance and commitment therapy.
· Behavioral therapy.
· Music therapy.
· Recreational therapy.
· Nutritional therapy.
· Medication
· Self Help.
· Psychoanalysis
· Inpatient Care
So the next time you plan to go on a diet and look like celebrities just remember:
· The models you see on cover pages of any magazine look good only with help. Sometimes the photographers use camera techniques to make them look that glamorous.
· Always remember that Barbie’s and Mannequins are not real women.
· There is a difference in the physique i.e. height and weight ratio of a model and an average being.
· A psychological study in 1995 found that three minutes spent looking at a fashion magazine caused 70% of women to feel depressed, guilty and shameful of their bodies.
The most important fact is that stay happy ,love and respect your body.
